Pushkar Lake

Pushkar, believed to be one of the most sacred places in India, is home to the semicircular Pushkar Lake. This lake in Pushkar, consisting of 52 ghats, is only 10 meters in depth at its center with shallow parts close to the banks where the pilgrims can easily take the ritualistic holy dips into the sacred waters of the lake. It is widely considered that any person taking a dip in the Pushkar Lake on the auspicious day of Kartik Purnima will be forgiven for all his or her sins. After bathing in the Pushkar Lake the pilgrims worship Lord Brahma, the Creator of all, at his temple situated close to the lake.

The pilgrims at Pushkar also float diyas and flowers in the evening on the holy waters of the Pushkar Lake. This beautiful sight in the evening at the Pushkar Lake with the reflections of the sparkling stars in the water mesmerizes each and every beholder at Pushkar.

Everything that has even a remote association with the Pushkar Lake is believed to divine and holy. According to the legends the surest way to attain salvation from all the worldly attachments and to be pardoned for all sins of life, one must take a holy dip in the Pushkar Lake. With its 52 ghats, this lake in Pushkar is bordered by almost five hundred Hindu temples. The holy ghats in Pushkar Lake were built by the rulers of different princely states of Rajasthan and so many of the ghats were named after these princely states. The most important ghats in Pushkar Lake include Brahma Ghat, Varah Ghat and Gau Ghat.

The holy ashes of Gandhiji were showered into the Pushkar Lake from the Gua Ghat, which is also known as the Main Ghat. Brahma himself is considered to make his prayers from the Brahma Ghat. Vishnu the preserver is considered to have appeared in the form of a boar or Varaha, his third incarnation, in the Varah Ghat. The visitors who visit the Pushkar Lake are told not take photos at the lake and to take out their shoes before visiting the ghats and getting into the waters of the lake.
