Mehrangarh Fort is one of the largest forts of Jodhpur. It is also rated as one of the famous tourist spot of the country. This fort is situated quite high above the city. In and around the fort there are thick walls. Inside the periphery of the fort there are also several other forts which are known for their detailed artworks and fashionable precincts of the fort. The name ‘ Mehrangarh’ fort was derived from a Sanskrit word. The name ‘ Mihir’ means sun, ‘ garh’ means fort. Later on with the passing of time and the style of pronouncing the name it got changed to Mehrangarh. There are various places of tourist attractions located near the fort.

Every year there has been good turnaround of tourist traffic to the places of attraction in and around Mehrangarh Fort in Jodhpur. The names of the places of attraction Moti Mahal, Phool Mahal, Sheesh Mahal, Sileh Khana and Daulat Khana etc are prominent. There are also other places of interests situated near Meherangarh Fort. These are The Chamunda Mataji Temple and various other places of interest or attraction in and around the fort. There is a museum in and around Mehrangarh Fort. The museum has the exhibits like Elephant’s Howdahs, Palanquins, Daulat Khana, Armory, Paintings, The Turban Gallery and The Folk Instruments Gallery.
It was way back in the year 1972 on March, His Highness The Maharaja Gaj Singh 11 formed The Meherangarh Trust Museum to set up a world-class museum in Jodhpur. In the beginning the museum has collections of paintings, portraits, books and manuscripts, weapons, textiles and tents and various objects of other forts of art.
Jodhpur’s Mehrangarh Fort along with Mehrangarh Trust Museum is currently in the process of undertaking the conservation and restoration project of Ahichtragarh Fort in Nagaur. The museum has collections of various manuscripts in Sanskrit, Hindi and various other regional languages of the country. The trust of the museum also celebrates some of the prominent festivals of the country.
