Jantar Mantar

Jaipur, located in the west of India, is the capital state of Rajasthan. Popularly known as the “pink city”, the city offers lots of tourist attractions to visit. Built by Maharaja Jai Singh, the founder of Jaipur, the Jantar Mantar is one of the five astronomical observatories and is also the most popular. Initially known as the Yantra Mantra, which means instruments and formulae, this tourist attraction got its name due to mispronunciation by locals and tourists. Build between the years 1727 to 1733, this tourist attraction adds to the glory of the royal city of Jaipur.

Consisting of fourteen major geometric devices that include time measuring instruments, predicting eclipses, tracking stars in the orbits, as ascertaining the declinations of planets, and determining the celestial altitudes and related ephemerides. An interesting instrument of Jantar Mantar that is sure to surprise all is the Samrat Jantar. This is the largest instrument with measurement of 90 feet high. With the help of this instrument, the time of the day can be calculated from the shadow.
