Hawa Mahal

Hawa Mahal is regarded as the architectural wonder in Jaipur and Jaipur has always been associated with this wonder. Hawa Mahal was built in 1799 by Maharaja Sawai Pratap Singh. The word “Hawa Mahal” means “Palace of Wind” and it has always been recognized as one of the major landmarks of Jaipur. Thus, Hawa Mahal is an indispensable part of the City Palace.

Hawa Mahal is actually an extension of the Zenana palace or the women’s chambers and it is located quite far away from the main complex. Hawa Mahal is a five storey building and it exhibits a fascinating architectural work. And, the credit must be given to the designer, Lal Chand Usta. This is basically a striking manifestation of Rajput artistry skill in designing red stone structures. The architectural beauty get enhanced by the white borders and beautiful outlining of Hawa Mahal. The motifs are painted in quick lime. You can enjoy the fascinating view of the town from this building and this is definitely one of the major attractions of the Hawa Mahal which is known to draw an impressive number of tourists every year. You will be able to see all the lanes and bazaar of Jaipur from there. And, the royal ladies used to observe the everyday life in Jaipur from Hawa Mahal.

Even today the small balconies are availed by the city watchers. Hawa Mahal has got a pyramid shaped structure. The arched roofs and hanging cornices have been wonderfully carved and each of them appears to be an individual piece of art. Cool breeze enters through tiny windows and keep Hawa Mahal quite cozy and comfortable even in the hottest months of the year. The gorgeously decorated door opens to the huge courtyard and it is encircled by a two storeyed building from all the three sides. The two storeyed building also houses a small archaeological museum. The jali work on the small pink windows of the Hawa Mahal are quite impressive. Thus, Hawa Mahal is indeed an architectural wonder and you must explore it while in Jaipur.
