Deo Somnath Temple

Deo Somnath Temple is perhaps the most hyped tourist attraction in Dungarpur, Rajasthan. It is located at the outskirts of the city, 24 kms away from Dungarpur city center. This temple is known to attract an impressive number of tourists every year especially those who worship Lord Shiva. The Deo Somnath Temple is dedicated to Lord Shiva. Apart from its religious significance, you would surely be interested in exploring the fascinating 12th century architecture of this temple.

It is indeed a wonderful architectural piece in Rajasthan. Deo Somnath Temple is basically a stone temple which is a replica of the original Somnath Temple in Gujarat. It is interesting to note the history or story behind the setting up of this temple. Mahmud Ghazni destroyed the original temple in 1025 and looted and looted all its treasures. The devoted Hindus were very concerned about the future of Somnath Temple and they decided to build a replica of it. A big thanks to all those devoted Hindus for creating such a wonderful temple. Interestingly, the Deo Somnath Temple also resembles the carvings of Khajuraho in Madhya Pradesh. The stone carved elephant at the entrance would greet you with warm reception and you would be finding stone Nandi, Shiva's bull near the main shrine.

The hand prints of Sati on the temple walls are quite unique and you would get to know a lot about the Hindu concept of Sati from the Deo Somnath Temple. The ceiling of the corbeled dome would remind you of the architectural styles of the Jain temples in Ranakpur. Even the pillars of the Deo Somnath Temple have been wonderfully carved. Explore the temple walls and the inscriptions, stuccos and sculpted figures on it. The ambiance and the architecture would surely remind you of the ancient temples.
