Chittorgarh was established in the seventh century when the Sisodia Rajputs made it their capital. Named after Chittrangad Maurya, the Chittorgarh Fort was remained under the control of the Rajput rulers till the sixteen century when it was captured by the Mughals. The Rajputs fought valiantly for saving the city and fort from the clutches of the Mughal army and embraced death instead of giving up to the Muslim rulers. The Chittorgarh Fort was besieged for three times and every time women at the fort opted for Jauhar, the act of sacrificing oneself in a pyre instead of being exploited by the Muslim army.
The Chittorgarh Fort was built for the first time in the 9th century and was renovated by the Sisodia ruler, Ajay Pal between the years 1174 and 1177. The 150 m high an 3 km long Chittorgarh Fort was attacked for the first time by Ala-ud-din Khilji, the ruler of Delhi in 1303 when he heard about the beauty of Rani Padmini, queen of Rana Rattan Singh. He wanted to have Rani Padmini after he saw the queen’s reflection on the water tank overlooking the palace. But Rani Padmini with her children and other ladies performed Jauhar. Chittorgarh regained its lost glory in the mid-15th century when Rana Kumbha was ruling from the Chittorgarh Fort. The Vijay Stambh was erected by Rana Kumbha after he was victorious in his battle with the ruler of Malwa, Mahmud Khilji.
